On 26 January 2023 Andrew Turnell was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia, “For significant Services to the protection of children through social welfare initiatives”.

We are so proud of what he achieved and are humbled to be able to continue his great work. We are all standing on Andrew’s shoulders when we are working alongside children and families.

To commemorate the award, Andrew asked his old friend Nigel Scott to prepare a short documentary to capture the history of Signs of Safety. Nigel interviewed a variety of collaborators from around the world. Andrew’s mentors and peers who, over the years, helped him to develop and promote the Signs of Safety approach. This video includes several vignettes from co-creator Steve Edwards and also John Hancock, who kicked off the work in Western Australia in 1994 asking Steve and Andrew to teach and support Eastern Region child protection staff in applying the approach in all their work.

This 17 minute video reveals both the human face and world-wide impact of the Signs of Safety over the past three decades
